A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

In his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, February 11, Mitt Romney stated that the “central mission” of the President of the United States is to create jobs:

The President who took office on January 20th, 2009 should have had one central mission –put Americans back to work! Fight for every job! Because every job is a paycheck and paychecks fuel Americans’ dreams.

(I always thought that the President’s central mission was to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, but what do I know?)

Exactly how should the President  put Americans to work?  Maybe he could invade a sovereign nation or two–that’s worked out well. Or is he advocating  a federal program to create and/or subsidize the creation of private-sector jobs, like that proposed in the the “21st-Century Full Employment and Training Act”.

Could it be that the devilishly handsome Mitt Romney is a closet Socialist posing as venture capitalist? Could it be that the tea he served his “fellow” Republicans is laced with the hemlock of a federal jobs program?

I pondered the wisdom of one of founders of scientific socialism, Harpo Marx; he remained silent on the subject.

But his brother Groucho did offer some valuable insight:

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

Obviously, I must have misunderstood Mr. Romney’s speech.
