Disaster

“Today is a disaster,” she complained bitterly.

These are not encouraging words to hear at 7:08 A.M. on a Wednesday morning. My friend Sally is definitely going to have a bad day.

It’s cold and rainy. She had to lug a crate-like suitcase along the platform and up the steps onto the train while battling commuters too eager to grab a seat. Upon boarding the train, her purse vomitted its contents into the aisle. After picking up the loose change, a wallet, gum, and an assortment of coupons. Sally heaved the hunter-green beast into an empty seat with a heavy groan and sat down with a sigh.

“It’s also a day you shouldn’t have worn white pants,” I add, pointing out the gray streaks left on her white corduroy by the dirty suitcase.
